DOC’S PROGNOSIS
THE ART OF SETTING TRAPS — How Elite Fighters Make Knockouts Look Easy
What’s good, family —
Doc’s back in your inbox!
Today we’re diving into the skill casual fans never notice, but real students of the sport obsess over:
The trap.
The setup.
The moment a fighter forces a mistake… and PUNISHES it.
Let’s break down the science of controlled deception, the real reason great fighters look psychic.
A lot of fans think big shots, knockdowns, and KOs come from a flurry of punches and one just HAPPENS to land. Which in turn, will make them underappreciate certain fighters’ intelligence, taking their skills for granted due to a misDIAGNOSIS.
This is the source of the average fan’s misguided assessments, which will lead to an overall lack of appreciation for the sport of BOXING. That’s my PROGNOSIS. This is where TREATMENT begins! Doc discusses.

Bernard Hopkins - King of the Trap

Roberto Duran - Legendary Trap Artist
🥊 WHAT’S A “TRAP” IN BOXING?
A trap is simple:
You show your opponent something they think they can take…
then you take it away and hit them for trying.
It’s chess, not checkers.
Most knockouts don’t happen from power.
They happen because a fighter thought they were safe.
A trap steals that belief.

Devin Haney DROPS Brian Norman Jr. with a “Peek-a-Boo” style trap.
And once a fighter is caught in that trap…
the only way out is to go down.
Devin Haney successfully laid plethora of traps, like the one where he showed Brian Norman he was there when he really wasn’t. Therefore catching him with a LEFT HOOK that left Norman SHOOK. Devin Haney executed the main topics of the first two issues of Doc’s Corner:
Footwork (Issue #1)
Power (Issue #2)
They called him “pillow fisted,” but the truth is with footwork, timing and balance… EVERYBODY HAS POWER.
Before we get into traps further, let’s discuss what went down this weekend during the RING IV Main Card and find examples of various types of traps.
FIGHTS FROM LAST WEEKEND
When you watched the fights last weekend — did you notice anything?
Outside of the dominance displayed by the victors…
There were A Lot of Traps!
👑 THE MASTERS OF TRAP SETTING:
David Benavidez
Pressure Traps
He suffocates you, then steps off at an angle right when you swing back.
You think you’re countering —
you’re actually getting countered.
Standing tall… chin exposed…
exactly the position he wants you in. Exactly the trap that Anthony Yarde fell into.
Abdullah Mason & Bam Rodriguez
Counter-Punch & Probe Traps
Mason and Rodriguez weren’t just “counter-punching” their opponents Sam Noakes and Puma Martinez, respectively, they were manufacturing counters by forcing opponents into the exact mistakes that they wanted. They give the same jab look, then suddenly…
BOOM.
Step-back and counter.
You walked into it.
Another tactic employed in both fights was “probing” by throwing soft shots, not to hurt, but to gather data.
Then they’ll make you chase a moment that you THINK is your advantage.
The same sequence will be thrown until they get the reaction that they desired, one that you already demonstrated that you’ll do, and once you commit…
BOOM.
Lights out.
Now admittedly, Bam demonstrated more patience, Abdullah was more willing to engage in an exchange, but both implemented these tactics, both secured the victory.

Anthony Yarde succumbs to the relentless pressure of David Benavidez.
🎯 THE THREE INGREDIENTS OF A GOOD TRAP
1. Predictability (On Purpose)
You act like you’re repeating a pattern.
Throw the same shot…
Step to the same angle…
Give the same look…
Not because you’re stuck — because you want them comfortable. A comfortable fighter is a careless fighter.
2. The Bait
You create an opening that you WANT them to attack.
Examples:
Lower the right hand just a bit
Lean forward like you’re overcommitted
Leave the body exposed
Pause your jab on purpose
They think they found a weakness; they didn’t.
They think that you gave them a gift; you didn’t.
3. The Punishment
The moment they bite, you answer.
Clean.
Sharp.
Immediate.
Timing doesn’t beat them — their own decision beats them. That’s the trap.
🔍 HOW TO SPOT A TRAP IN REAL TIME
When you’re watching fights, look for these signs:
1. Repetition
If a fighter keeps doing the same thing early, they’re collecting information.
2. Lazy-looking shots
Soft jabs, half-hooks, pawing…
These aren’t mistakes —
they’re bait.
3. Sudden speed change
A fighter goes from calm to explosive with no warning.
That’s the snap of a trap closing.
4. Opponent overreaching
If someone keeps falling in, leaning forward, or swinging wild…
That’s not them being aggressive.
That’s them being played.

Floyd Mayweather catching Ricky Hatton (RIP) with a check hook off of a trap.
👨🏾⚕️ DOC’S TAKEAWAY
Great fighters don’t rely on reactions —
they engineer reactions.
A trap isn’t about tricking somebody.
It’s about:
controlling rhythm
controlling belief
controlling expectation
When you control those things, you control the fight.
Watch the matches with that lens and you’ll see a new sport unfolding.
Welcome to the level above.
This is why Doc’s Corner exists.
